The American System
The American System, was a plan that was made to unify the nation, when it came to the economy. Madison hoped that this system unite, different parts of the country, and make a stable economy that could make the nation self-sufficient. The plan had three different parts, which were: making internal transportation systems, creating and establishing a tariff to protect, and bringing back the national bank. The plan seemed so sufficient, that even people who were up against the president, supported this plan. The American system greatly promoted nationalism because it was a way to bring the country together and unify it. It made a national currency, making trade easier so America was starting to rely more on American goods than foreign goods.
This is a primary source because it's a direct quote from Clay.
“If the term of seven years were to be selected, of the greatest prosperity which this people have enjoyed since the establishment of their present constitution, it would be exactly that period of seven years which immediately followed the passage of the tariff of 1824.”
